Portrait Session Details
How do I book my session? You can complete the info request on the contact page of my site, or you can reach me via email or phone. I typically book 4 – 6 weeks in advance, and even further out as the holidays draw near. Newborn sessions are best within 2 weeks of birth, and with advance notice of your due date, I will be sure to hold space on my calendar for your new arrival.
Session fees are due prior to all scheduled portrait or special event sessions and is non-refundable. Your session date is guaranteed once payment is received. Please give 24 hours notice if your date needs to be rescheduled due to illness or inclement weather.
Accepted methods of payment:Cash, Checks and all major credit cards via Paypal. 5% Virginia state sales tax will be added to all packages and product orders.

Dawn Bernard Photography reserves the right to reproduce or publish any image for use in promotion, publication or competition.
Where will my session take place? Once we’ve confirmed your session date and time, we’ll discuss many things including the location of our shoot. We may decide on your home, a park, or another favorite spot, where your child(ren) will feel comfortable and free to be themselves!
What will my session be like and how long will it last? I’ll do my best to make sure our time together is relaxed and fun! Sessions are typically 1 – 2 hours, and the duration can vary greatly depending on the number of people I am photographing, ages of the children, location, etc.
My approach is very casual, and allocating plenty of time ensures that everyone has a chance to get to know me, relax and be comfortable, take time for clothing changes, snacks, diaper changes or just a “break” to run around and play. It is frequently during “playtime” that I get my favorite images!
What about clothing? This is the question I am most frequently asked! I’ll provide you with lots of detail about clothing in your pre-session consultation, and we can discuss many options, but here are some general guidelines.
Keep in mind that our session time will allow for “wardrobe” changes! For newborns, there is nothing as adorable as a birthday suit, or simple diaper cover and perhaps a fun hat!
For toddlers and older children, solid colors and simple patterns are best – try to avoid logos and other distracting images on clothing.
For family shots, a coordinated effort is great, without necessarily being “matchy matchy.” We can discuss to this to be sure we achieve the “look” in your portraits that you are hoping for.
Whether classic or quirky, the clothing your child and family chooses should best reflect their spirit!
What happens when the fun is over? After your session, I begin to edit and prepare your images for proofing. Which will be approximately 7 days later.
You’ll then have access to your images in a private, personalized online gallery, at which time you can place your print order.
Print orders are delivered about 2 weeks after they are placed and paid in full.
Do you have a referral program? Yes! Nothing lets me know how happy a client is with their portraits like referring a friend or family member! To say thank you for your vote of confidence, I have recently instituted a referral program. Here are some frequently asked questions about the program.
I was referred to Dawn Bernard Photography by a friend, what does this mean? It means that you’ll receive a complimentary 8 x 10 (or equal value print credit) when you place your print order, AND so will the friend who referred you!
How will you know who referred me, or who I referred to you? The new client booking the session should indicate who referred them, to be sure that print credits are applied appropriately. I referred a friend to Dawn Bernard Photography. THANK YOU! When your friend or family member that you have referred, books their session, you’ll receive a complimentary 8 x 10 (or equal value print credit)!
If I refer a friend, can the complimentary 8 x 10 be from my most recent session? If the client that you refer books within 30 days of your most recent session, you may apply the print credit towards that session. Otherwise, the print credit will apply to a future session.
Can I use the referral print credit towards my sitting fee? The print credit/complimentary 8 x 10 may be applied to the purchase of prints only.
